How do I use the Quick Calculator?

Left-click on the triFX icon in your menu bar. A calculator window will open where you can convert any amount between currencies. Right-click opens the settings menu.

What are Favorite Currencies?

Favorites are currencies you use most often. Set them by right-clicking the triFX icon → ⭐ Favorite Currencies. In the calculator, your favorites appear as quick-tap buttons so you don't have to search every time.

What does "Next: 20h 47m" mean in the status line?

That's the countdown to the next automatic rate refresh. triFX updates rates once every 24 hours; this tells you exactly how long until the next fetch so you always know how current your data is.

What do the rate change indicators mean?

The ↑ arrow means the rate increased since the last update, ↓ means it decreased. No arrow means the change was less than 0.01%. This helps you spot trends at a glance.

How do I change the base currency?

Right-click the triFX icon → Base Currency → choose your preferred currency. Your rates update automatically. The old base currency will automatically swap into the display list so you don't lose your selection.

How do I select which currencies to display?

Right-click the triFX icon → Display Currencies and select up to 3 currencies you want to track. Selected currencies show checkmarks.

How often do exchange rates update?

Rates update automatically once per day. You can also manually refresh anytime via Right-click → Refresh Rates. If a fetch fails, triFX automatically retries with exponential backoff (5s, 15s, 30s, 1m, 5m).

What do the status icons mean?

💱 = live data successfully loaded. ⚠️ = showing cached data (last refresh failed). 📡 = no network connection.

Does triFX work on MacBooks with a notch?

Yes. triFX uses two slim status items rather than one wide one, which tends to fit more comfortably around a notch. That said, on any Mac it's macOS itself — not triFX — that decides how many menu bar icons fit and can hide lower-priority ones once the bar gets crowded, which happens more easily on smaller or notched screens. If triFX's icon ever disappears, check System Settings → Control Center → "Allow in the Menu Bar," or free up space by closing a couple of other menu bar apps.

Can I run triFX without it appearing in the Dock?

Yes. Right-click → Hide from Dock to run triFX as a pure menu bar app. Right-click → Show in Dock to bring it back. Your preference is saved between launches.

How do I copy a conversion result?

Open the calculator (left-click), enter your amount, then click the 📋 Copy Result button. The result is copied to your clipboard ready to paste anywhere.

Where does the exchange rate data come from?

Rates are provided by ExchangeRate-API (exchangerate-api.com), a reliable financial data service. Rates are for informational purposes only.

Is my data private?

Yes. triFX stores all settings locally on your Mac. No data is sent to any server beyond the exchange rate API request, and we don't track your usage.

Can I use triFX offline?

Yes. triFX caches the last successful rates so you can view them and use the calculator without an internet connection. The 📡 icon appears when you're offline.

What about future updates and support?

triFX is maintained by an independent developer as a hobby project. I strive to keep the app functional and compatible with current macOS versions, but future updates are provided at my discretion and availability.

How do I uninstall triFX?

Drag triFX from your Applications folder to the Trash. All settings and cached data will be removed.

triFX does not collect, transmit, or share any personal data. All settings and preferences are stored locally on your device.

Network Usage

triFX connects to ExchangeRate-API (exchangerate-api.com) solely to retrieve current exchange rates over a secure HTTPS connection. No personal information is transmitted during these requests. The app monitors network availability to optimize requests and works seamlessly offline.

Local Storage

The app stores the following data locally on your Mac:
