📸 SessionTrail

SessionTrail — Photo Journal & GPX

A photography journal where the session — not the individual frame — is the atom. Plan a shoot, record it on the trail with background GPX, photo log and voice memos, reflect on what worked, and ship a one-page PDF shoot report. Built for serious shooters: landscape, astrophotography, wildlife, travel, editorial.

🌅 NOAA conditions on-device · 📍 Background GPX · 🌌 Astro mode · 🇨🇭 Built in Switzerland

Every NOAA calculation (sunrise, golden hour, blue hour, civil/nautical/astronomical twilight, moon phase, Milky Way galactic core) runs on your device — no network needed in the field. iCloud syncs metadata privately; heavy artifacts (GPX, voice memos, reference snaps, PDFs) stay on the recording device.

Perfect For

  • Landscape photographers planning multi-day trips around golden hour
  • Astrophotographers chasing the Milky Way galactic core
  • Wildlife photographers tracking long stalks and event coverage
  • Travel photographers organising multi-country trips with mixed currencies
  • Working pros logging editorial / commercial assignments
  • Anyone who keeps a written shoot journal today and wants it searchable

Key Features

  • Three-phase model: Plan → Shoot → Review → Archived. Each phase has its own surface; the journal preserves what was true at shoot time
  • NOAA conditions snapshot: Sunrise, sunset, golden / blue / civil / nautical / astronomical twilight, moon phase + rise/set, Milky Way galactic-core visibility — all on-device
  • Destination local time: Sun, moon and Milky Way times automatically render in the destination's wall clock, not your device's. A session in Tokyo viewed from Berlin shows Tokyo's sunrise — no mental conversion required
  • Multi-day breakdown: Per-day golden / blue hour computed live for every day in the planned window
  • Auto-recompute: Conditions refresh automatically when you tweak the date or location during the Plan phase, then freeze when you advance to Shoot
  • Background GPX recording: Three sampling modes — Sparse (5–30 min, GPS duty-cycled to save battery), Standard (15–60 s), Dense (1–10 s, for wildlife and events)
  • Multiple GPX tracks per session: One session can hold many recordings (morning hike, evening walk, dawn excursion). Each is renameable, individually shareable, with its own time range and point count
  • Day-chip strip on Shoot tab: Multi-day sessions filter photo log, voice memos, reference snaps and tracks per planned day — entry counts shown right on the chip
  • Out-of-window validation: When you log a frame whose timestamp lands outside the planned shoot window, SessionTrail asks before saving and offers to extend the session dates so the entry lands on the right day
  • Photo log per frame: Subject, lens, filter, frame number, and stabilization setup (handheld, tripod, monopod, gimbal, slider, drone)
  • Voice memos with titles: AAC into a per-session folder; playback, swipe-to-delete, transcription-ready
  • Reference imagery: PHPicker for inspiration before the shoot; quick reference snaps from the iPhone camera during the shoot
  • Pre-shoot checklist: Reusable templates so packing for an astro shoot doesn't start from scratch every time
  • Session templates: Save a complete plan (subject, target output, gear, checklist) as a reusable preset — apply it once and the new session is set up
  • GearGrove kit sync: Apply gear kits managed in our companion app GearGrove with one tap; lent / returned items propagate automatically via App Group
  • Gear kit with snapshot semantics: Your loadout survives renames in the source gear catalog — the journal records what you actually took
  • Scoped tags: subject:landscape, location:wallis, mood:moody, plus custom prefixes
  • Trips: Group multi-session journeys ("Iceland 2026", "Provence Lavender Week") with one currency, one window, and aggregated costs
  • Cost tracking: Estimated on Plan, actual on Review, with live variance. Trip-level incidentals (flights, hotel, car rental) separate from per-shoot expenses
  • 50+ currencies: Curated picker (CHF, EUR, USD, GBP, JPY, CLP, ARS, ISK, PEN, BTN…) plus an "Other…" entry that accepts any 3-letter ISO 4217 code
  • One-page PDF shoot report: Title, dates, location, plan, conditions, gear, reflection, rating, outcomes, costs, photo log table, GPX stats — ready to file, print, or attach to a competition entry
  • Multi-page Trip PDF: Cover page (name, dates, location, currency, cost aggregate) plus one concise page per member session — perfect for portfolio submissions and grant applications
  • Session bundle ZIP: Export the entire session (every GPX track, voice memo, reference snap and reference image, plus a session.json manifest) in a single archive for cold storage or handoff
  • GPX-only bundle: Lightweight ZIP of just the tracks (renamed in chronological order) plus a manifest with labels, time ranges and point counts
  • Session & Trip recap views: Beautiful one-page summaries you can share as PNG straight from the app — great for Instagram, story-style trip reports, or sending a teaser to a client
  • Astro appearance mode: Red on black to preserve dark adaptation under the Milky Way
  • Theme picker: Light, Dark, System, or Astro from Settings
  • First-launch onboarding: Quick tour of the three-phase model and the gear kit philosophy so newcomers don't bounce
  • In-app Help & FAQ: Settings → Help answers the same questions you'd email about, without leaving the app
  • Toast / banner error UI: Recording failures, voice-memo glitches, missing permissions, kit-sync hiccups — every failure surfaces visibly so nothing is silently lost
  • Reflection prompts: What worked, what didn't, lessons, conditions vs. expectation, free notes — five structured questions per session
  • Star rating + outcomes: 0–5 stars on the session, plus tagged outcomes (published, printed, submitted, archived, reshoot needed)
  • Active vs Archived sections: Closed journal entries collapse below active work, with a top-level filter for location / date range / trip
  • Delete confirmation: Swipe-to-delete asks first — no silent destruction of GPX, voice memos and the photo log
  • iCloud private sync: Metadata only; binaries stay on the recording device
  • EN + DE: Full localization for English and German, with photographer jargon ("Shooting", "Aufnahme", "goldene Stunde", "Milchstrasse")
  • Made in Switzerland 🇨🇭

Free vs. SessionTrail Pro

SessionTrail's full Plan → Shoot → Review workflow is free. SessionTrail Pro unlocks the features serious and travelling photographers reach for most. One-time unlock — no subscription.

✅ Free tier

Full Plan / Shoot / Review workflow · NOAA conditions snapshot (sun / golden / blue / twilight / moon / Milky Way) with destination-local time · photo log with every field · voice memos · reference snaps · single-track Standard-mode GPX recording · checklist + session templates · iCloud private sync · Astro theme · EN + DE localization.

⭐ SessionTrail Pro

Multi-day day-chip filter on Shoot · Trips with cost tracking + currency aggregation · per-session and multi-page Trip PDF reports · multiple GPX tracks per session · Sparse + Dense (battery-aware) sampling modes · session bundle ZIP + GPX-only ZIP exports · GearGrove kit sync · PNG recap sharing for sessions and trips.

Astro accuracy disclaimer: Lunar phase and Milky Way calculations are journal grade — within an hour or so, not arcsecond accurate. Synodic-month moon phase ignores perturbation terms; Milky Way visibility approximates the galactic core as a single point at Sagittarius A*. Plenty for "is the moon full this weekend" and "can I shoot the core tonight" decisions; not a substitute for a planetarium.
Sync limits in v1: CloudKit private database syncs metadata (sessions, trips, plans, reflections, costs, photo log). Heavy artifacts — the GPX file, voice memos, reference snaps and generated PDFs — currently stay on the device they were captured on. Multi-device binary sync is on the roadmap.

Why Choose SessionTrail?

📔 Journal-first

The session is the atom — not the file. Frames live on the camera card; the journal captures intent, conditions, and what worked.

🌅 NOAA conditions

Sunrise, sunset, golden / blue / civil / nautical / astronomical twilight, moon phase, Milky Way visibility — computed on-device.

📍 Background GPX

Three sampling modes with duty-cycled GPS for long Sparse intervals. Multiple tracks per session. PhotoMetaPro-compatible GPX 1.1 output.

🌐 Destination-local time

Sun, moon and Milky Way times automatically render in the destination's wall clock — no mental conversion when you're planning a shoot abroad.

📸 Photo log

Per-frame: subject, lens, filter, frame number, stabilization. Out-of-window timestamps trigger a warning so entries land on the right day.

🎙️ Voice memos

Titled, playable inline, swipe-to-delete. AAC audio in the session's voice folder.

🧳 Trips

Group sessions under a Trip with one currency, one window, and aggregated cost roll-up across all member shoots.

iCloud private database for metadata; heavy artifacts stay on device. No third-party analytics, no trackers.

☁️ iCloud sync

Sessions and trips sync across your devices via your private CloudKit database. No account beyond your Apple ID.

🇨🇭 Made in Switzerland

Crafted with Swiss precision. Designed for real shooters by a working photographer.

⚠️ Important Disclaimer

Use at your own risk: SessionTrail is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. The developer is not liable for damages, losses, or issues arising from the use of this application — including data loss, missed shots, or inaccurate astronomical calculations.

Astronomical calculations: Sunrise / sunset / twilight / moon phase / Milky Way times are journal-grade approximations and should not be the sole basis for time-critical astrophotography decisions. Cross-reference with PhotoPills, Stellarium, or a planetarium for arcsecond-accurate planning.

User responsibility: You are responsible for your own data backups via iCloud and for verifying that GPX exports correctly imported into your downstream tools (PhotoMetaPro, Lightroom, etc.).
